Millions of Cats (eBook)

eBook
Wanda Gág

“Millions of Cats” by Wanda Gág, first published in 1928, is a timeless classic of children’s literature that combines gentle humor, lyrical storytelling, and charming illustrations. When a lonely old man sets out to find the perfect cat for his wife, he stumbles upon a hillside teeming with “hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats.” Unable to choose just one, he brings them all home—leading to unexpected chaos.
As the countless cats begin to quarrel over who is the prettiest and most deserving of love, a surprising twist reveals a lesson in humility, kindness, and inner beauty. Gág’s rhythmic, repetitive text and detailed black-and-white illustrations create a captivating experience for young readers and listeners alike.
Both written and illustrated by Gág, the book broke new ground in American picture books with its hand-lettered text and flowing artwork that mirrors the story’s gentle rhythm. Millions of Cats remains a beloved favorite for its warmth, whimsy, and simple yet profound message, making it a cherished read-aloud for generations of children and parents.

About the Author

Wanda Hazel Gág (pronounced GOG), born on March 11, 1893, in New Ulm, Minnesota, was a celebrated American author, illustrator, and artist. The eldest of seven children born to Bohemian parents Anton and Elisabeth Gág, Wanda grew up in a home filled with art and music despite financial hardships. After her father’s death in 1908, she took his final words to heart: “What Papa couldn't do, Wanda will have to finish.” Determined to follow her passion, she completed high school despite local pressure to leave and support her family, later teaching in Springfield, Minnesota.
Gág’s artistic career began in earnest when she illustrated A Child’s Book of Folk-Lore in 1917. Her 1923 art exhibition at the New York Public Library marked the beginning of her fame. She became known for her lithographs and as an illustrator for progressive publications like The New Masses, embracing feminist and free-love ideals.
Her greatest legacy lies in children's literature, particularly her classic Millions of Cats (1928), which earned a Newbery Honor and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. This success allowed her financial independence to pursue art and writing. Wanda Gág died in New York City on June 27, 1946, leaving behind a rich cultural and literary legacy.
