About the Author

Malcolm C. Duncan, often cited as Malcolm A. Duncan, is best known for compiling Duncan’s Ritual of Freemasonry, one of the most widely referenced and enduring works on Masonic ritual and symbolism. Little is documented about Duncan’s early life, including his exact birth date, family background, or personal history, which has added an air of mystery around the man behind this influential book.
Published in 1866, Duncan’s Ritual of Freemasonry provides detailed illustrations and descriptions of the secret signs, grips, and passwords used in the Blue Lodge Degrees, Royal Arch Chapter, and other Masonic bodies. Duncan claimed his work aimed to preserve these rituals for historical purposes, at a time when such knowledge was largely transmitted orally. His book became an essential reference for both Masons and curious outsiders, especially in an era of rapid growth in fraternal societies.
There is little recorded about Duncan’s middle or later life, and no other major works are attributed to him. His contributions lie primarily in making Masonic rituals accessible to the general public, which sparked both controversy and enduring interest. Details of his death remain scarce, but his legacy lives on through the continued popularity of Duncan’s Ritual, which remains in print and in use more than a century and a half later.
