Gene Stratton-Porter's A Girl of the Limberlost has captivated readers since its initial appearance in 1909. Abandoned by her embittered mother and shunned by her classmates, Elnora Comstock seeks consolation in nature amid the wilds of eastern Indiana's Limberlost Swamp. Teeming with danger as well as beauty, the vast marshland offers Elnora an unexpected way to build a better life.
Its realistic characters are headed by an intelligent, independent heroine who has served as a positive role model for generations. Its portrait of Elnora's thriving friendship with a young man who shares her joy in nature depicts a pure romance, rooted in shared interests and mutual respect. Written by a popular Midwestern author of the early twentieth century, this is a book to cherish.
“...there is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it.”

About the Author

Eleanor H. Porter (1868–1920) was an American novelist best known for her enduring classic Pollyanna, a heartwarming tale that gave rise to the term “Pollyanna” to describe an unfailingly optimistic person. Born in Littleton, New Hampshire, Porter was musically gifted and initially trained as a singer at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. However, she later turned to writing and found her true calling in literature.
Porter began her literary career with short stories and serialized fiction in popular magazines. Her first novel, Cross Currents, was published in 1907, but it was Pollyanna (1913) that brought her widespread fame. The novel became a massive bestseller and led to several sequels, the first of which, Pollyanna Grows Up (1915), was written by Porter herself. The book’s uplifting message resonated with readers during the difficult years of World War I.
In her middle years, she wrote several other successful novels, including Just David (1916), The Road to Understanding (1917), and Oh, Money! Money! (1918), often focusing on themes of kindness, personal growth, and moral integrity.
Eleanor H. Porter died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1920 at the age of 51. Her legacy endures through Pollyanna, a symbol of enduring hope and cheerful resilience.
